Pools and spas, designed with the yard and not after it

A pool built in isolation and a pool designed into a landscape look different for the next thirty years. We do both parts, so they are the same decision.

Brooks Landscape and Design builds custom pools and spas across Ventura County and the Conejo Valley, including waterfalls, streams, water walls and other water features, finished in pebble or plaster. Because we design and build the surrounding landscape as well, the pool is positioned by the same people who decide where the deck, the shade, the kitchen and the planting go.

Why the sequence matters more than the shell

Almost every disappointing pool we are asked to fix was built correctly and placed badly. It sits where the excavator could reach rather than where the sun is at five in the afternoon, or it takes the only flat part of the yard and leaves nowhere to put a table, or its equipment pad ends up under the guest bedroom window because that was the shortest pipe run.

Designing the pool inside the landscape plan removes those compromises, because the deck, the shade structure, the barbecue, the equipment location and the planting are all on the same drawing when the shell is positioned.

Water features, and when they are worth it

Waterfalls, streams and water walls are the features people most often add and most often regret, and the difference is nearly always sound. A water feature you hear from the seating area earns its running cost. One you only hear from the far end of the yard becomes a pump you switch off.

We site them by where you will actually sit, and we tell you plainly when a feature is decorative rather than functional. Stone that looks like a natural outcrop needs enough mass and the right rock to hold that illusion, and a small budget spread thin across a large feature is the most common way it fails.

Finishes and what they cost you later

Pebble finishes are more durable and more forgiving of the water chemistry a real household actually maintains. Plaster is smoother underfoot and less expensive up front, and it wants more attention. Neither is the right answer for everybody, and any company that tells you otherwise is describing its own preference rather than your yard.

Questions people actually ask

Do you build the pool and the landscape, or subcontract one of them?

Brooks Landscape and Design designs the landscape and builds the hardscape, planting and structures with its own crews, and delivers the pool as part of that single project rather than as an unrelated trade. One company is accountable for how the two meet.

Can you renovate an existing pool instead of building a new one?

Yes, in many cases. Resurfacing, re-tiling, new coping, new decking and re-plumbing an old equipment pad can change how a pool looks and runs without excavating a new shell. We will say when a renovation is genuinely the better value and when it is money spent on a shape that was wrong to begin with.

How long does a pool project take?

It depends on the shell, the access, the inspections and the weather, and any number given before those are known is a guess. We give a schedule once the design is fixed and the site conditions are known, and we tell you which parts of it are outside our control.
