Softscape & Irrigation
Softscape: planting, water and light
The living half of the landscape, plus the two systems that keep it alive and let you see it after dark.
Softscape is the planted landscape and the systems that serve it: all phases of planting, low-voltage lighting, irrigation and drainage, synthetic turf and sod lawn, and dry river beds. Brooks Landscape and Design installs all of it, on properties across Ventura County, the Conejo Valley and the Santa Monica Mountains.
Plant selection is a climate decision, not a taste decision
Our service area covers coastal plain at Camarillo, the Conejo Valley, and hot inland valleys at Moorpark and Simi Valley, within roughly twenty miles. A palette that thrives in marine air struggles in an inland August, and a plant chosen from a photograph rather than for the site is the most expensive mistake in a garden, because it fails slowly and takes several seasons to prove itself wrong.
Choosing correctly for the specific property is also the cheapest form of drought tolerance available: a plant suited to where it stands needs less water for the whole of its life without anybody managing it.
Irrigation is a system, and it needs zones that make sense
The most common irrigation fault is not a broken head, it is zoning that groups plants with different needs on one valve. When a thirsty plant and a dry-tolerant one share a circuit, one of them is always being treated wrongly, and the usual result is that everything gets the wetter setting and the drought-tolerant half slowly rots.
Drainage is the same system viewed from the other end. Where water leaves matters as much as where it arrives, and on clay soils in parts of Simi Valley it matters more.
Low-voltage lighting doubles the hours a garden exists
A landscape without lighting is visible for the hours you are least often home. Low-voltage lighting is cheap to run, safe to work on, and can be added to zone by zone. Done well it is invisible: you see the trunk of the oak lit and not the fixture pointing at it.
The two failures are lighting everything, which flattens a garden into a car park, and aiming fixtures where they hit somebody in the eye from the seating area.
Synthetic turf, honestly
Synthetic turf earns its place in dog runs, deep shade where grass has never grown, and small areas that get heavy use. It also gets hot in full inland sun, it needs proper base and drainage to avoid odor, and it is a plastic surface with a finite life rather than a permanent answer. We install it where it is the right tool and we say so when it is not.
Questions people actually ask
Will drought-tolerant planting look bare?
Only if it is designed as a gravel field with specimens in it. A drought-tolerant garden that is planted densely enough, with layers and some evergreen structure, reads as a full garden. The sparse look is a design decision, not a consequence of using less water.
How often should irrigation be adjusted?
Seasonally at minimum, because a schedule set in July is wrong by November and a controller nobody touches is the most common source of both dead plants and enormous water bills.
Can you fix an existing irrigation system rather than replace it?
Yes, usually. Re-zoning valves, converting spray to drip where planting has matured, and replacing a controller often achieves more than a full replacement, at a fraction of it. A full replacement is honest advice only when the mainline itself is failing.
