Brooks Landscape and Design is a family-owned landscape design and construction company based in Moorpark, California, working across Ventura County, the Conejo Valley and the Santa Monica Mountains since 1986. We design in 3D, build hardscape, pools and outdoor rooms, and plant and irrigate the finished landscape, with our own crews rather than a chain of subcontractors.

One team, whole property

Design it once, build it once

Design it once and build it once: the people who draw your plan are the people who pour the concrete, set the boulders and plant the garden. Nothing is handed to another trade and lost in translation, and there is one company to hold responsible for how the parts meet.

It also changes the order of the work. Grading and drainage come before hardscape, hardscape before the pool, and planting last, because every stage decides where water goes for the one after it. A yard built by six unconnected contractors gets that order wrong, and the cost of it shows up in year three.

How a project runs

One property in the Conejo Valley: pool, spa, bridges, outdoor rooms and planting, designed and built by one team.

How a project actually runs

Four stages. The first two are where the money is saved.

  1. 1. We come and look

We walk the property, listen to what you want from it, and say plainly what we think it needs. If the answer is smaller than you expected, that is what we will tell you.

  2. 2. We model it in 3D

You see the finished yard to scale before anything is priced for construction. Changes here cost an afternoon. The same change after a footing is poured costs a demolition.

  3. 3. We build it

Grading and drainage, then hardscape and structures, then pools, then planting, irrigation and lighting. In that order, because every stage decides where water goes for the one after it.

  4. 4. We hand it over properly

You get the irrigation zoning explained, the controller set for the season you are in, and an honest account of what this landscape will need from you and when.

Pools, spas and outdoor rooms

The pool is positioned by the people who design the rest of the yard

Almost every disappointing pool we are asked to fix was built correctly and placed badly: it sits where the excavator could reach rather than where the sun is at five in the afternoon, or it takes the only flat ground and leaves nowhere to put a table.

Designing the pool inside the landscape plan removes that, because the deck, the shade, the kitchen, the equipment location and the planting are all on the same drawing when the shell is positioned.

Four things we say that cost us work

Anybody can write the word integrity on a website. These are the specific sentences that lose us jobs, and they are the reason to believe the rest of it.

We will not quote a price per square foot

Access, slope, existing conditions and how much has to be removed change the figure more than the size of the lot does. A number given before somebody has stood on the property is a number that will move, and a number that moves is not a price.

We will tell you the job is smaller than you thought

We will tell you the job is smaller than you thought, because a great deal of our work is one element on an otherwise finished property. If a failing wall and a re-zoned irrigation system is what the property needs, that is what we will say, and we will not sell a whole-property design on top of it.

We publish where our own approach falls short

One company running everything concentrates your risk in one company, and a specialist will beat a generalist at the specialist thing. Both are true, both are arguments against hiring us, and both are on this site in writing.

We show the construction photographs

A portfolio of nothing but golden-hour final shots tells you nothing about how a company works when the yard is a hole in the ground. The excavation, the machinery and the half-built pools are on the work page on purpose.

What clients have said

Every Google review Brooks Landscape and Design clients have left is five stars. Three of them said the following, quoted in full and unedited.

Unfortunately our insurance company approached us and told us if we didn’t obtain a Wildfire Certificate we would be dropped. This required us to do an almost complete re-landscaping of our yard. Fortunately we found Brooks. My wife and I are not green-thumbs. Brooks was able to come in and provide a design that we ended up loving. He worked with us to incorporate design elements we liked as well as working with the company doing the final inspection for our fire certificate to make sure his designs would comply with the rules to get the certificate. He even came out for a video conference to make sure we understood all the rules that needed to be followed for planting. He also worked directly with our HOA when there were questions about the design and what we needed to submit to them for approval. Brooks’ crew was extremely efficient and friendly and Brooks was on site multiple times each week once work started to make sure things were going as planned. He was also very flexible, there were a couple of extra projects we threw out last minute that we thought we might as well do while we were redesigning things and he didn’t have a problem with anything. The final price was also just about exactly what he quoted us up front. Overall Brooks was a pleasure to work with and we love the final product. We’ve already recommended him to several of our neighbors with no reservations about the quality of work and service he would provide.

Daniel B. Google review

We highly recommend them without hesitation, because their service consistently exceeded every expectation we had going into this partnership.

Andrea M. Google review

Their willingness to adapt and problem-solve on the fly saved us significant time, money, and unnecessary stress along the way.

What is different about building in each of them

Questions we are asked before the first visit

Do you do small projects or only whole properties?

Both. A great deal of our work is one part of a property: a fire-resilient first five feet around the house, a failing retaining wall, a pool renovation, or an irrigation system that was never zoned properly.

Do you build pools yourselves or subcontract them?

Pools are delivered as part of the landscape project we design and run, rather than as a separate trade dropped into a finished yard. One company is accountable for how the pool and the landscape meet.

What does a landscape project cost?

A landscape project costs what its access, its slope, its existing conditions and the amount of removal require, and those change the figure more than the size of the lot does. We give a fixed price against a defined design rather than a range against an idea.
